The pattern underneath the rows
The four patterns behind most relationship problems
After a few hundred couples you notice something. The subject of the argument varies enormously and the underlying pattern barely varies at all. Almost everything I see falls into one of four shapes, and recognising yours is usually the moment things start to move.
Pursue and withdraw. One of you moves toward the problem wanting it resolved now, the other moves away needing space first. Each reaction triggers the other, so the harder one pushes the further the other retreats.
Criticism and defence. A complaint arrives as a character judgement rather than a request, so it is met with justification instead of understanding, and the original need never gets heard at all.
Mutual withdrawal. Neither of you raises anything any more because the cost of the row outweighs the benefit of being honest. The house stays peaceful and completely empty.
Score keeping, which often shows up alongside who did more, who gave way last time, and who is owed. Fairness replaces generosity, and generosity is what actually holds a couple together.
Most couples run one dominant pattern with a second appearing under real stress. Neither person chose it, both maintain it, and it is entirely learnable to step out of once you can see the shape of the thing.
That is where the work starts. Not with who was right on Tuesday, but with which of these four you are running and what interrupts it. Where score keeping has taken hold, it often arrives alongside jealousy and resentment.
Sessions on foot, not just in a room
Walking Therapy in Macclesfield and the Cheshire Countryside
Macclesfield sits on the edge of the Peak District, which makes something possible here that is harder in a city. Sessions can be held walking rather than sitting across a table from each other.
It is not a gimmick. Walking side by side removes eye contact, and it pairs well with the , which for a lot of people is exactly what makes a difficult subject sayable. It pairs well with the , and there is somewhere to look that is not your partner face. Several clients have told me they said things on a footpath they could not have said in a chair.
It suits couples who find clinical settings uncomfortable, anyone who tenses up at the idea of a counselling room, and people who simply think better outdoors. We agree a route, we keep it private, and if the weather turns we move indoors or online.
If you would rather be in a room, my consulting space is at Flynn House on Woodford Road in Bramhall, around twenty five minutes from Macclesfield via the A523, with parking on site. Online over Zoom is the third option. More about how I work at Rebooting Relationships.

From first call to final session
What Happens in Couples Counselling in Macclesfield, Start to Finish
People want to know what they are actually buying, which is fair. Here is the whole arc rather than a vague promise about better communication.
It opens with a free 45 minute call where you tell me what has been happening and I work out whether I can help. If I cannot, I will say so and point you elsewhere. Assuming we go ahead, the first session maps your cycle, so you can both see the sequence you run rather than arguing about who started it.
The middle sessions are where the tools land. You get one thing to practise at a time, you report back on what went wrong with it, and we adjust. Everything lives in a shared library of exercises and short videos that stays yours afterwards, and you can message me between sessions for the moments that flare at eleven at night.
The final session is a handover. We write down what works for you specifically, what your early warning signs are, and what to do when it slips, because it will. The whole thing runs six to twelve weeks and ends deliberately. Much of it builds on transactional analysis.
What people are really after
What Macclesfield couples want counselling to change
Almost nobody arrives asking for a framework. They arrive wanting a particular feeling back. These four come up in nearly every first conversation.
Disagreeing without it turning into a row
A shared vocabulary and a few dependable tools, so a difficult subject stays a discussion instead of becoming the argument you have had for years.
Affection back in ordinary days
Warmth, touch and genuine interest returning to normal life, so being together amounts to more than a shared address and a joint account.
A route through after broken trust
For couples dealing with an affair or another serious breach, a careful and honest process for working out whether this can be rebuilt and what that would ask of each of you.
Facing the same way again
Working as a partnership rather than two people negotiating, with a shared and realistic sense of what the next few years actually look like.
What is on offer
Couples counselling, marriage counselling or coaching in Macclesfield
People search with very different words for the same need. Some type couples counselling, others couples therapy or marriage guidance. The label matters far less than the fit, so here is exactly what is on offer and who each part is for.
Couples therapy and counselling
The core of what I do. For partners caught in a repeating argument, drifting apart, or wanting to get back on the same side. couples therapy
Marriage counselling
The same structured approach for married couples who want practical tools rather than an open ended weekly conversation. marriage counselling
Affair and trust recovery
For couples in the aftermath of an affair or a serious breach of trust, worked through carefully and without blame. affair recovery
Working on it on your own
If your partner is not ready yet, you can still start. Changing your half of the pattern genuinely moves it. individual sessions
One figure, agreed upfront
The cost of couples counselling in Macclesfield explained
It begins with a free discovery call. We talk through what has been going on, what each of you wants, and whether I am the right person. No pitch, no obligation, and I will say so if I am not the right fit.
Most counsellors around Macclesfield charge per session, usually between £60 and £150 an hour, which mounts up quietly across a year with no defined end point. I work as a single programme instead, so the full figure is clear before you commit to anything.

“Stephen has helped us to understand each other better, how we can communicate more effectively, and how to avoid the negative cycle we had been in for close on 2 years. We completed the 6 week programme and we are so glad that we reached out to him when we did.”

“Working with Steve was a pleasure. We were quite nervous to start with but he put us at ease and helped us to understand ourselves better to then understand each other better. We felt like the tasks and sessions were well organised and felt supported through the whole process.”

Couples counselling in Macclesfield: your questions answered
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
Do you offer couples counselling in Macclesfield itself?
Sessions run online over Zoom for Macclesfield couples, and in person at my Bramhall practice for those happy to make the drive. Most couples out this way start online and some switch to in person later. We settle it on the free call.
How far is the practice from Macclesfield?
Flynn House, Woodford Road, Bramhall, Stockport SK7 1PA, roughly twenty five minutes from Macclesfield via the A523, with parking on site. If that journey is what is stopping you, we work online instead.
Can we do sessions walking rather than sitting in a room?
Yes, and a good number of couples locally prefer it. Walking side by side rather than facing each other tends to make difficult subjects easier to raise, and people often speak more freely outdoors. Just say on the first call.
How much does couples counselling cost?
The core programme is £1,000 for a bespoke 6 to 12 week package. That includes live coaching sessions tailored to your situation, full access to the resource library, which is a Google Drive of exercises, videos and worksheets, and unlimited messaging support between sessions. There is an optional fortnightly payment plan. For comparison, most counsellors around Macclesfield charge per session, usually between £60 and £150 an hour, which adds up quietly across a year.
We have tried counselling before and it did not help. Why would this?
Often because the previous experience gave you space to talk without giving you anything to do differently. If you left sessions feeling heard but nothing changed by the Wednesday, the structured and tool led approach here tends to feel very different.
What if my partner will not come?
Start on your own. A pattern needs both people to keep it running, so changing your half genuinely shifts it. In my experience a reluctant partner often joins after a few weeks once they can see something actually changing.
