An honest starting point
The patterns that bring Wilmslow couples in
Hardly anyone gets in touch because of one enormous row. It is usually the slow accumulation of small ones, the little disconnections that stack up until the relationship starts to feel like hard work. See whether any of these sound like your week.
The same argument, on a loop. You can predict exactly how it goes. A small trigger, the same escalation, one of you pushing while the other shuts down, and nothing ever landing anywhere useful.
The cold quiet afterwards. After a flare-up you can go a day or two barely speaking, polite in front of the children and distant everywhere else.
Closeness has thinned out. The affection, the touch and the sex have slowly been replaced by logistics and a shared calendar.
You are running parallel lives. Brilliant teammates on the family admin, near strangers by nine in the evening. You love each other and are not sure you still like each other.
You are trying to recover after an affair. Trust took a serious hit and you are both standing in the aftermath wondering whether it can be rebuilt. Hard, yes. Hopeless, no.
Recognise yourself in a couple of those and here is the reassuring part: nothing is broken in you or your partner. You are simply two people stuck in a pattern with its own momentum, often shaped by how each of you is wired to respond under pressure. If that rings true, my guide to anxious attachment is worth ten minutes.
A short drive from Wilmslow
A private room, a short drive from Wilmslow
My practice is at 5 Trentham Avenue, in Heaton Moor (SK4 3QD), a straightforward fifteen minutes or so from Wilmslow. You come to a private, quiet room where the only thing on the agenda is the two of you, with no kids, no dishes and no phones pulling you away. For an hour it is just you, your partner and the pattern you keep falling into.
There is also a slightly different option that some couples really take to. We can do the session walking outdoors instead of sitting in the room. Side by side rather than face to face, moving rather than fixed in a chair, a lot of people find the hard conversations come more easily. It is not for everyone, but if sitting opposite someone makes you tense up, walking can change the whole feel of it.
Being close by matters because getting to a session should not be a project in itself. Couples drive in to see me from Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Handforth, Styal, Mobberley, Prestbury, Cheadle Hulme and the wider SK9 area. If you are further out across the county, my couples therapy in Cheshire page covers the same work, and if you simply prefer your own sofa I also see couples online over Zoom, losing nothing in the method by doing so.
Plenty of the couples I see have already tried something. A few sessions at Relate. A private counsellor. A stretch of individual therapy that helped one of you more than it helped the relationship. You came away understanding the problem. You just did not come away with a way to stop having it. That gap is the whole reason I work the way I do, and it is the same thinking behind how I approach relationship counselling more widely.

Specialist, not general
A specialist couples approach, not general counselling
Wilmslow has plenty of good general counsellors. I do something deliberately narrower. I work only with couples, and only through a structured, skills-based method rather than open-ended talking. If you are not sure which kind of help you actually need, my honest breakdown of coaching versus counselling is the place to start.
Each session is built, not improvised. We check in on the week, then work on the specific pattern in front of us using frameworks you can name, remember and use in the moment, rather than only understand in hindsight. Every session ends with a recap and one concrete thing to practise before the next.
Everything we cover lives in a shared library of exercises, notes and short videos, and you get unlimited messaging support between sessions for the flare-ups that never wait for your next appointment. It is the same method I bring to marriage counselling when that is the better word for where you are.
It all runs as a defined programme of roughly six to twelve weeks, with the explicit aim of working myself out of a job rather than keeping you in the room. Many couples feel the shift within the first two or three sessions. For the thinking behind the approach, see my explainer on what couples coaching is.
The point of it all
The results couples actually come for
No one arrives asking for a model or a method. They arrive wanting to feel differently about the person across the kitchen table. Here is what most Wilmslow couples are really after.
Communication that does not spiral
A shared language and a few dependable tools, so a hard topic stays a conversation instead of detonating into the same row within minutes.
Reconnection and intimacy
Warmth, affection and physical closeness finding their way back, so the relationship feels like more than a shared to-do list again.
Rebuilding trust
After an affair or a serious breach, a steady and honest process for working out whether the foundation can be rebuilt, and how. It is one of the most common reasons couples ask whether this kind of help really works.
Feeling like a team again
Getting back on the same side and facing the next few years together, rather than negotiating them like opponents.
No open-ended meter
How the programme works, and what you pay
It opens with a free discovery call: what is going on, what you each want, and whether I am the right fit, with no pitch attached. From there I build a programme around your situation, usually six to twelve weeks, delivered in person a short drive from Wilmslow or online over Zoom.
Most counsellors around Wilmslow bill per session, which leaves the total open-ended. I work as one bespoke programme of around a thousand pounds, with an optional fortnightly payment plan, and everything is included, so there are no per-hour surprises. If your situation is really about the marriage itself, the same structure underpins my marriage counselling.

Take two minutes to watch this short message on how the sessions actually feel. Couples who had already tried a general counsellor often say this is where it finally made sense for them.
What couples say about working with me
★★★★★
“Steve has helped me navigate one of the hardest periods of my life. I instantly felt safe, completely listened to, and never judged. We spent our sessions walking around Bramhall Park, which I found really therapeutic and grounding. He equipped me with practical tools and techniques, and I always left feeling calmer, more confident and more in control.”

“We decided the 6 week course was best for us and we learnt and grew so much in such little time. Steve showed us we are not alone in how we feel and provided us with a variety of information and methods of dealing with the issues we were facing. We finished with a clear plan for our future, and loads of new resources we will continue to use.”

★★★★★
“Steve was great at holding space for both my husband and I to talk through our challenges and where we each wanted our relationship to get to. He brought in great techniques and tools that we were able to take away and continue practicing. We would highly recommend Steve to any couple wanting to find deeper connection.”

Common questions about couples therapy in Wilmslow
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
Does couples therapy actually work?
For most couples where both people are willing to engage, yes. Structured, skills-focused couples work has a strong evidence base and tends to work best when it is practical rather than open-ended. Because the approach is built around tools you use between sessions, change shows up in real life, and many couples notice a shift within the first two or three sessions.
How long does it take, and how many sessions will we need?
My programme usually runs six to twelve weeks. It is not open-ended and it is not a one-session fix. The exact number of sessions depends on what you are working through, but the structure means you are building tools from the very first session rather than waiting months to feel a difference.
How do we know it is time to get help?
If you are having the same argument on a loop, drifting into parallel lives, or sitting in long silences after a row, that is usually a good moment to reach out. Sooner tends to be easier than later, before resentment sets hard. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit, and you do not need to wait for a perfectly calm week to start.
What if my partner will not come?
You can still start on your own. I often work with one person on their relationship, and when one partner changes how they show up, the whole dynamic between you can begin to shift. It does not mean the relationship is your fault. It means you have more influence over it than it feels like right now.
Are you a specialist couples therapist or a general counsellor?
A specialist. Unlike a general counsellor who sees a bit of everything, I work only with couples and only through a structured, science-based method. That focus is the whole reason the sessions are practical and time-limited rather than open-ended. You can read more about the approach in what couples coaching is.
