If counselling did not quite do it
Most couples I meet have already tried counselling in Manchester
If you are looking for couples therapy in Manchester, there is a fair chance this is not your first attempt. Maybe a few sessions at Relate. A private counsellor in the city centre. A stretch of individual therapy that helped you more than it helped the relationship.
You came away understanding the problem better. You just did not come away with a way to stop having it.
That gap is the whole reason I work the way I do. Traditional counselling is strong on exploring the past and naming feelings. It is often light on the practical part, the framework you reach for at 9pm on a Wednesday when the same argument starts up again. If you want the honest version of that difference, I break down coaching and counselling in full.
Whether you have been searching for couples therapy, couples counselling or marriage counselling in Manchester, what most people are actually after is the same thing. A way out of the loop.
Why this is personal
I have sat on your side of it
I did not arrive at this through textbooks alone. In 2016, not long after our son was born, my own marriage hit the wall. My wife Nikki was struggling with postnatal depression. I handled it badly. I went quiet, and then I started trying to manage her out of it, which I told myself was support and was really fear.
We had days where we barely spoke. I genuinely wondered whether we would make it.
What turned it around was not a pep talk from a mate. It was finally seeing the pattern we were both caught in as a pattern, rather than as my fault or hers. Once I could see it, I could not un-see it, and suddenly we had something we could actually work on together.
That is what I try to give every couple I work with. Not just a space to talk. A clear picture of what is happening between the two of you, and a small set of tools you can start using straight away.

Three things to try before your next argument
You do not need to wait for a first session to start. These are three of the first things I share with most couples.
01
Book the conversation, do not ambush it
The hardest talks tend to get sprung on each other at the worst possible moment. Last thing at night. Mid-task. In front of the kids. Try agreeing a time instead. “Can we talk about money on Sunday morning?” A conversation your partner can see coming is one they can actually show up for.
02
Turn the complaint into a request
“You never help” is a complaint, and it puts your partner straight on the back foot. “I would really love it if you took bath time on Tuesdays” is a request, and it gives them somewhere to go. Same underlying need, completely different reception.
03
Repair quickly, you do not have to do it perfectly
Every couple ruptures. The strong ones are not the couples who never snap, they are the ones who circle back faster. A clumsy “sorry, that came out worse than I meant” within the hour beats a perfect apology three days later. The structure behind this is the backbone of my couples therapy programme.
In person or online
Couples therapy in Manchester, in person or online
A lot of people search for couples therapy in Manchester “in person” or “face to face”, and that matters to you, so here is the straight answer. You can see me either way.
In person. I see couples face to face at my practice in Stockport, in the heart of Greater Manchester and an easy reach from the city centre, south Manchester, Didsbury, Cheadle and Cheshire. Some couples simply do their best work in the room, away from the kids and the washing up, with nothing to do but focus on each other for an hour.
Online. I also work over Zoom for couples who would rather not travel, who are on different shifts, or who live further out. Plenty of couples find it easier to open up from their own sofa, and it makes fitting sessions around work and childcare far simpler. Either way the tools, the structure and the messaging support between sessions are the same.
Either way the work is the same, and so are the tools. It carries on between sessions too, with unlimited messaging support for the moments that come up in real life. We can talk through which option suits you best on the call. It is the same way I approach relationship counselling for couples across Greater Manchester and the UK.
What it actually involves
What couples therapy with me actually involves
Couples therapy with me is not an open-ended set of weekly appointments that quietly drift on for a year. It is a programme with a beginning, a middle and an end.
It starts with a free discovery call. We talk through what is going on, what you both want, and whether I am the right fit. No pitch, no obligation.
From there I build a bespoke programme around your situation, usually six to twelve weeks. You get live sessions, in person at my Stockport practice or online over Zoom, a private library of exercises and videos in a shared Google Drive, and unlimited messaging support between sessions.
On cost, most couples counsellors in Manchester charge per session, often somewhere between £60 and £150 an hour, which adds up quietly across a year. I work as a single programme of around £1,000, with an optional fortnightly payment plan, so you can see the full picture from the start. The aim is to hand you the tools and then step back, not to keep you in the room. If marriage is the word that fits your situation better, it is the very same approach I bring to marriage counselling.

From conflict to connection

Watch a short message about how this actually feels in practice. Manchester couples who had tried Relate, private counsellors or talk therapy often describe this as the part that finally clicked.
What Manchester couples say about working with me
★★★★★
“Steve has helped me navigate one of the hardest periods of my life. I instantly felt safe, completely listened to, and never judged. We spent our sessions walking around Bramhall Park, which I found really therapeutic and grounding. He equipped me with practical tools and techniques, and I always left feeling calmer, more confident and more in control.”

★★★★★
“Stephen had a huge impact on improving my relationship. I learnt lots about my partner, and they me, and we have some great tools to refer to as and when we need them. We finished our sessions feeling super positive about our future together.”
Andrew, Google
★★★★★
“Steve diffused our heated conversations and reflected back what each of us said, which hugely helped. We got through massive differences in what we want for our futures. Now we are aligned and can happily move forward.”

Common questions about couples therapy in Manchester
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
Do you offer couples therapy in Manchester in person or face to face?
Both. I see couples in person at my practice in Stockport, in Greater Manchester and easy to reach from the city centre, south Manchester and Cheshire, and I also work online over Zoom. Some couples prefer the focus of the room, others prefer the convenience of joining from home. We can decide together which suits you on the discovery call.
How much does couples therapy in Manchester cost?
Most Manchester couples counsellors charge per session, usually between £60 and £150 an hour. I work differently. My programme is around £1,000 for a bespoke six to twelve week package, with an optional fortnightly payment plan. Live sessions, a resource library and unlimited messaging support are all included, so there are no per-hour surprises.
Which parts of Greater Manchester do you cover?
My practice is in Stockport, so it is an easy trip for couples in south Manchester, Didsbury, Cheadle, Bramhall, Hazel Grove, Marple and across Cheshire. For couples further out, in Manchester city centre, Trafford, Tameside, Bolton or anywhere in the UK, online sessions mean location is no barrier at all.
Can I come on my own if my partner will not join?
Yes. I work with individuals on their own relationships often, with clients ranging from 29 to 70+. If one person shifts how they show up, the whole dynamic shifts with them. That does not mean the relationship is your fault. It means you have more influence over it than it feels like right now.
How soon can we start, and how long does it take?
Most couples have their discovery call within a week of getting in touch. The programme itself usually runs six to twelve weeks, and many couples notice a shift in the first two or three sessions. The goal is real change in weeks, not an open-ended commitment.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ couples?
Yes, all couples are welcome. The frameworks I use are about the pattern between two people and how you communicate, and they apply to any relationship regardless of who is in it.
Where I am based
Serving Manchester from my Stockport practice, plus online
My practice sits just south of Manchester in Stockport, an easy trip from the city centre, Didsbury, Cheadle and right across Greater Manchester. Prefer to stay home, or live further out? I also work online over Zoom with couples across the UK. Wherever we meet, the work itself is exactly the same.
