Couples counselling near me
Couples Counselling Near Me, In Stockport and Online UK-Wide
If you have just typed “couples counselling near me”, you probably want two things. Help from someone who actually gets it, and help you can start soon. With me, near means either genuinely close by at my Stockport practice, or always close by online from your own front room.

it beats distance
What “near me” really means when you need couples counselling
Most people who search couples counselling near me are not really asking about miles. You are asking something quieter and more important. Will this person understand us, and can we start before things get any worse?
So let me be honest with you about distance, because the nearest name on the map is rarely the right one. Couples counselling is not like finding a plumber. The thing that decides whether it works is the fit between you and the person sitting across from you, far more than the postcode at the top of their listing.
That is why I offer near in two ways. If you are across Greater Manchester or Cheshire, near can mean genuinely close by, in the room with me at my Stockport practice. If you are anywhere else, near means online, which is honestly the closest help of all, because it arrives right there on your sofa the moment you can make the time.
If you are typing “near me” in the middle of a rough patch, take a breath. You do not have to settle for whoever happens to be nearest, and you do not have to wait weeks for a slot. You get to choose help that fits, and start it soon. If you want the honest difference between my approach and traditional counselling first, I lay it out on coaching versus counselling.

Genuinely near, or always near
Near you across Greater Manchester and Cheshire
My practice sits in Stockport, right in the middle of Greater Manchester, so for a lot of couples nearby it really is an easy trip. If you are in Stockport itself, or out into south Manchester, Didsbury, Cheadle, Bramhall, Altrincham or across Cheshire, the room is genuinely on your doorstep.
Some couples do their best work face to face, with the front door shut on the kids and the washing up, and nothing to do for an hour but pay proper attention to each other. If that is you, and you are within reach, in person is a brilliant option.
And if you are further out, in Manchester city centre, Trafford, Tameside, the wider North West, or anywhere else in the UK, you are still near. We simply meet online over Zoom instead, with exactly the same tools, the same structure and the same support between sessions. Wherever you are, distance stops being the thing that decides whether you get help.
Not sure whether you need in person or online?
Both work just as well. Here is a simple way to decide which suits you, so you can stop weighing it up and get started.
Choose in person if
You want the focus of the room, away from home distractions.
You are local, near Stockport or across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.
You find screens hard, and talk more openly sitting across from someone.
Choose online if
You are busy, and a drive plus a babysitter is the thing that stops sessions happening.
You and your partner are often on different shifts or schedules.
You live further out, or you simply open up more easily from your own home.
Still on the fence? That is exactly the kind of thing we sort out together on the free discovery call. There is no wrong answer here.
Who comes to me
Who I work with
If you are searching near me and quietly wondering whether your situation is the kind I deal with, here is the honest answer. It almost certainly is. Over the years I have sat with a wide range of couples and individuals, and the people I work with most often include:
- Long-term couples who love each other but keep landing in the same argument and want a way to break the cycle.
- Individuals working on the relationship alone, because a partner will not come yet, or you want to shift how you show up first. Clients have ranged from 29 to 70 plus.
- Engaged and pre-marriage couples who want to set strong foundations before the wedding, not after the first hard year.
- Couples after an affair, at that pivotal point of deciding whether to rebuild trust or separate.
- Intercultural couples navigating two families, two sets of expectations and the space in between.
- Busy professionals, including a lot of medical and business households, who solve problems all day at work and feel stuck only here.
Whatever bracket you fall into, the work is bespoke to you. It is the same care I bring whether someone arrives looking for couples therapy, marriage counselling or relationship counselling. The label matters far less than the pattern we are trying to shift.
Cost and how it works
What it costs and how we begin
It starts with a free discovery call. We talk through what is going on, what you both want and whether I am the right fit. No pitch, no obligation. Most of the nearby counsellors a search turns up charge per session, often between £60 and £150 an hour, which quietly builds up across a year. I work differently.
From there I build a bespoke programme around your situation, usually six to twelve weeks, for around £1,000, with an optional fortnightly payment plan so the cost is not a single hit. Included are live sessions in person at my Stockport practice or online over Zoom, a private library of exercises and videos in a shared Google Drive, and unlimited messaging support between sessions for the moments that flare up in real life. The aim is to hand you the tools and step back, not to keep you in the room. If marriage is the word that fits better, it is the same approach behind my marriage counselling.

From conflict to connection

Have a quick look at how this actually feels in practice. Couples who had already tried a nearby counsellor, Relate or talk therapy often describe this as the part that finally made sense.
What couples near you say about working with me
★★★★★
“Steve has helped me navigate one of the hardest periods of my life. I instantly felt safe, completely listened to, and never judged. We spent our sessions walking around Bramhall Park, which I found really therapeutic and grounding. He equipped me with practical tools and techniques, and I always left feeling calmer, more confident and more in control.”

“We decided the 6 week course was best for us and we learnt and grew so much in such little time. Steve showed us we are not alone in how we feel and provided us with a variety of information and methods of dealing with the issues we were facing. We finished with a clear plan for our future, and loads of new resources we will continue to use.”

“Being coached by Stephen helped me immensely. His insight, structure, honesty and openness allowed me to better understand how I was showing up in relationships. He always focuses on solutions, giving practical tips and advice for how to manage yourself. I cannot recommend his coaching more highly.”

Common questions about finding couples counselling near you
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
How near is near, and do I have to live by Stockport?
Not at all. If you are near Stockport or across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, you can come to the practice in person. If you are further away, we work online over Zoom, so you can be anywhere in the UK. Online is the nearest help of all, because it comes to wherever you are sitting rather than asking you to travel.
Which areas near you do you cover for in-person sessions?
My practice is in Stockport, so it is an easy trip for couples in south Manchester, Didsbury, Cheadle, Bramhall, Altrincham, Hazel Grove, Marple and across Cheshire. For couples in Manchester city centre, Trafford, Tameside, further across the North West or anywhere else in the UK, online sessions mean distance is no barrier at all.
In person or online, which one should we choose?
Both work equally well. Choose in person if you are local and value the focus of the room. Choose online if you are busy, on different shifts, further out or simply more comfortable at home. The tools, the structure and the support between sessions are identical either way, and we can settle it together on the call.
How much does couples counselling cost?
Most nearby counsellors charge per session, usually between £60 and £150 an hour. I work differently. My programme is around £1,000 for a bespoke six to twelve week package, with an optional fortnightly payment plan. Live sessions, a resource library and unlimited messaging support are all included, so there are no per-hour surprises.
Can I come on my own if my partner will not join?
Yes. I work with individuals on their own relationships often, with clients ranging from 29 to 70 plus. If one person shifts how they show up, the whole dynamic shifts with them. That does not mean the relationship is your fault. It means you have more influence over it than it feels like right now.
How soon can we start?
Most couples have their discovery call within a week of getting in touch, which is often quicker than the waiting list at a nearby counsellor. The programme itself usually runs six to twelve weeks, and many couples notice a shift in the first two or three sessions.
