Individual relationship counselling
When your partner will not come, or you want to start alone
A lot of people come to me on their own. They wanted couples support, but their partner was not ready, or flatly would not do it. Others simply decided they would rather begin with themselves before bringing anyone else into the room.
If that is you, you are not in the wrong place, and you are not doing it the wrong way round.
I work with individuals aged anywhere from their late twenties to their seventies, all of them trying to change something in a relationship that matters to them. Some are quietly heartbroken that their partner will not join. Some feel relieved to have a space that is just theirs. Both are completely normal.
This is not a watered-down version of couples therapy. It is its own piece of work, focused entirely on the one part of the relationship you can always reach, which is you.
The idea that changes everything
Why one person can change the whole relationship
Here is the thing most people do not quite believe when they first hear it. You do not need both people in the room to shift a relationship. You only need one person to change their part of the pattern.
A relationship is not two separate people standing side by side. It is a back and forth, a loop. You say something a certain way, your partner reacts, you react to their reaction, and round it goes. Most couples are not really arguing about the washing up or the money. They are stuck in a familiar dance, and both of them know the steps without thinking.
When you change your steps, the dance has to change too. Your partner cannot keep doing the old routine on their own. It simply does not work without your usual move to push against.
I want to be clear about what this does not mean. It does not mean the relationship is your fault, or that you are the problem to be fixed. It means you have far more influence over how things go than it feels like right now. That is not a burden. It is the most hopeful thing I can tell you, because it puts something back in your hands. It is the same principle behind my relationship counselling work, just approached from one side of the relationship.

The work itself
What we would work on together
Individual relationship counselling with me is practical. We are not just going to talk it over and hope something lands. We work on the specific things that are within your control, and we build the tools you can use the moment you put the phone down or leave the room.
Most of our work falls into a few areas.
Your triggers and reactions
We get clear on what sets you off, what is really going on underneath it, and how to respond instead of react. When you can feel a trigger coming, you get a choice you did not have before.
How you communicate
We look at how you raise things, ask for things and handle the hard conversations, so the way you speak invites your partner in rather than putting them straight on the back foot.
Boundaries and self-respect
We work out where your lines are, how to hold them calmly, and how to look after yourself in the relationship without slamming a door or quietly giving everything away.
What you can and cannot control
A huge amount of relationship pain comes from trying to manage what is simply not ours to manage. We separate the two, so you can put your energy where it actually makes a difference.
Showing up as your best self
Underneath all of it, this is the goal. Not becoming someone you are not, but turning up as the calmer, clearer, more grounded version of you, the one your relationship sees too rarely when things are tense.
A common worry
What if my partner joins later?
They can. It happens more often than you might expect. One partner starts on their own, the other notices the change, gets curious, and decides they want in after all. When that happens, we can simply widen the work to include both of you.
And if they never join, that is genuinely fine too. Plenty of people do this whole piece of work solo and see their relationship change anyway, because they have changed their part of it. You are not waiting on anyone else’s permission to start feeling better in your own relationship.
So there is no wrong way in. You can begin alone and stay solo, or begin alone and bring your partner in down the line. Either path works, and we never lock you into one on day one. If marriage is the word that fits your situation, this is the same honest approach I bring to marriage counselling, whether one or both of you are in the room.

In person or online
Getting started, and what it costs
Everything starts with a free discovery call. We talk through what is going on, what you want to change, and whether I am the right fit for you. No pitch, no obligation.
From there I build a bespoke programme around your situation. You get live one to one sessions, in person at my Stockport practice or online over Zoom, a private library of exercises and videos in a shared Google Drive, and unlimited messaging support between sessions for the moments that come up in real life.
On cost, I work as a single programme of around £1,000, with an optional fortnightly payment plan so the whole thing is not a single hit. You can see the full picture from the start, with no per-hour surprises. The aim is to hand you the tools and then step back, not to keep you coming forever.

Before you decide
See how I work before you reach out
Choosing to do this on your own takes a bit of courage. Watch a short message about how I actually work, so you have a feel for me before you ever book a call. People often tell me this is the part that helped them feel they could be honest.

Common questions about individual relationship counselling
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
Can individual counselling really help my marriage?
Yes. A relationship is a pattern between two people, and you are half of it. When you change how you respond, how you communicate and how you handle the hard moments, the pattern itself has to shift. You will not be able to control your partner, but you can change the part of the dynamic that is genuinely yours, and that often moves things more than people expect.
My partner refuses to come, is there any point?
There is, and you would be in good company. Plenty of the people I work with started exactly here, with a partner who would not join. You do not need both people in the room to change a relationship. You only need one person willing to look at their part and do something different with it. We work with what you can reach, which is you.
Will it work if only I do the work?
It can, and it does not mean the relationship is your fault. When one person shows up differently, calmer, clearer, less reactive, the old back and forth cannot carry on in the same way. You change your steps and the dance changes with them. I cannot promise an outcome, but I can tell you that one person doing the work is far from pointless.
Is this the same as personal therapy?
Not quite. This is coaching, and it is focused squarely on your relationship rather than on exploring your past for its own sake. We are practical and solution-focused, working on your triggers, your communication and your boundaries so you can use what we cover straight away. It is about where you are going, and the part you play in getting there.
Is it confidential?
Yes. What you share with me stays between us. The sessions are a private space that is entirely yours, whether we meet in person at my Stockport practice or online over Zoom, so you can be honest about what is really going on.
How much does it cost?
I work as a single bespoke programme of around £1,000, with an optional fortnightly payment plan so it is not a single hit. That includes your live one to one sessions, a private resource library and unlimited messaging support between sessions. There are no per-hour surprises, and we start with a free discovery call so you can decide before you commit to anything.
