When couples across Cheshire reach out
Very few couples come to me over a single dramatic event. Most have been quietly managing for months, sometimes years, while the same small frictions wear the connection thin. If two or three of these land, you are in familiar company, and it is exactly the ground couples therapy is built to cover.
The same argument, on a loop. Different week, different trigger, but underneath it is the row you have had a hundred times. One of you pushes, the other goes quiet, and nothing ever really gets resolved.
Days of silence. After a flare-up you can go a day, sometimes longer, barely speaking. You stay civil in front of the kids and then drift back to your own corners.
The intimacy has quietly slipped away. The affection, the closeness, the sex. The relationship has become a to-do list you run together rather than something you actually enjoy.
You have drifted into parallel lives. Work, kids, the house, the logistics. You are good teammates on paper and near strangers in the evenings. You love each other. You are not sure you still like each other.
You are trying to come back after an affair. Trust took a hit and you are both standing in the wreckage wondering whether it can ever be rebuilt. It is one of the hardest places to be, and not a hopeless one.
If you recognise yourself in two or three of those, you are not broken and neither is your partner. You are two people caught in a pattern that has built its own momentum. Naming that pattern is the first thing we do together, and if you want to understand one of the most common ones, my guide to the drama triangle is a good place to start.
On the Cheshire border, not a faceless service
Easy to reach from right across Cheshire
My practice is at 5 Trentham Avenue, in Heaton Moor, right on the edge of Stockport where it meets Cheshire (SK4 3QD). You come to a private, quiet room where the only thing on the agenda is the two of you, with no kids, no dishes and no phones pulling you away. For an hour it is just you, your partner and the pattern you keep falling into.
There is also a slightly different option that some couples really take to. We can do the session walking outdoors instead of sitting in the room. Side by side rather than face to face, moving rather than fixed in a chair, a lot of people find the hard conversations come more easily. It is not for everyone, but if sitting opposite someone makes you tense up, walking can change the whole feel of it.
Being local matters because getting to a session should not be a project in itself. Couples travel in to see me from right across east Cheshire, including Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Handforth, Poynton, Prestbury, Knutsford, Macclesfield and the wider SK and WA postcodes. If you are further into Cheshire, or you simply prefer your own sofa, I also work online over Zoom, and you lose nothing in the method by doing so. Couples closer to town often start on my Stockport couples therapy page instead.
Plenty of the couples I see have already tried something. A few sessions at Relate. A private counsellor. A stretch of individual therapy that helped one of you more than it helped the relationship. You came away understanding the problem. You just did not come away with a way to stop having it. That gap is the whole reason I work the way I do, and it is the same thinking behind how I approach relationship counselling more widely.

How the work actually runs
How couples therapy works, step by step
A lot of people picture couples therapy as an open-ended weekly chat that drifts on for a year. Mine is the opposite. It runs as a structured programme with a clear beginning, middle and end, and every session has a job to do. If you are weighing therapy against coaching, my piece on coaching versus counselling explains the difference in plain terms.
We start each session by checking in on the week and anything that has surfaced since we last met. From there we work on the specific pattern in front of us using clear frameworks you can actually name and remember, so you have something to reach for at nine on a Tuesday night when it all flares up again. I close by recapping what we covered and setting one practical thing to try before next time.
Everything we build lives in a shared resource library, with the exercises, notes and short videos in one place so you can revisit them whenever you need to. Between sessions you also get unlimited messaging support, for the real moments that never wait politely for your next appointment. It is the same structured method behind my wider relationship counselling work.
The whole thing sits inside a defined programme, usually six to twelve weeks, designed to hand you the tools and then step back rather than keep you in the room forever. Many couples tell me the penny drops in the first two or three sessions. If the word marriage fits your situation better, it is the identical approach I bring to marriage counselling.
What actually changes
The changes couples therapy can make
Nobody books a discovery call asking for a framework. They book because they want to feel a particular way in their relationship again. These are the outcomes couples across Cheshire are usually after.
Communication that does not spiral
A shared language and a few reliable tools so a tricky conversation stays a conversation, instead of tipping into the same row within minutes.
Reconnection and intimacy
The closeness, affection and physical side of things finding their way back, so the relationship feels like more than logistics again.
Rebuilding trust
For couples recovering after an affair or a breach of trust, a steady, honest way to work out whether and how the foundation can be rebuilt.
Feeling like a team again
Getting back on the same side, pulling in the same direction, with a shared sense of where the next few years are actually heading.
Straight talk on cost
What couples therapy in Cheshire costs
The honest answer to how much couples therapy costs is that it varies a lot. It begins with a free discovery call to talk through what is going on, what you both want, and whether I am the right fit, with no pitch and no obligation. From there I build a bespoke programme around your situation, usually six to twelve weeks, in person at my practice near the Cheshire border or online over Zoom, plus the shared resource library and unlimited messaging support.
Most private couples counsellors across Cheshire charge per session, often between sixty and a hundred and fifty pounds an hour, which quietly adds up when the work has no defined end. I work differently, as a single bespoke programme of around a thousand pounds with an optional fortnightly payment plan, so you can see the full cost from the start instead of watching a meter run. Live sessions, the resource library and unlimited messaging are all included. If you want an honest read on whether this kind of help pays off, my article on whether marriage counselling works lays out the evidence.

What couples across Cheshire say
★★★★★
“Steve has helped me navigate one of the hardest periods of my life. I instantly felt safe, completely listened to, and never judged. We spent our sessions walking around Bramhall Park, which I found really therapeutic and grounding. He equipped me with practical tools and techniques, and I always left feeling calmer, more confident and more in control.”

“We decided the 6 week course was best for us and we learnt and grew so much in such little time. Steve showed us we are not alone in how we feel and provided us with a variety of information and methods of dealing with the issues we were facing. We finished with a clear plan for our future, and loads of new resources we will continue to use.”

★★★★★
“Steve was great at holding space for both my husband and I to talk through our challenges and where we each wanted our relationship to get to. He brought in great techniques and tools that we were able to take away and continue practicing. We would highly recommend Steve to any couple wanting to find deeper connection.”

Common questions about couples therapy in Cheshire
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
What is couples therapy, and how is it different from counselling?
Couples therapy with me is a structured, skills-based way of working on the specific pattern the two of you keep falling into, rather than open-ended talking about the past. The focus is practical, with tools you can use in real life between sessions. If you want the fuller distinction, my guide to coaching versus counselling lays it out plainly.
What actually happens in a session?
Each session has a clear shape. We check in on the week, work on the pattern in front of us using a framework you can name and remember, then close with a recap and one practical thing to try before next time. Everything we cover lives in a shared resource library, and you have unlimited messaging support between sessions.
How much does couples therapy cost in Cheshire?
Most private couples counsellors across Cheshire charge per session, often between sixty and a hundred and fifty pounds an hour, which adds up when there is no defined end. I work as one bespoke programme of around a thousand pounds, with an optional fortnightly payment plan, and everything is included, so there are no per-hour surprises.
Can we get couples therapy on the NHS?
NHS couples support is very limited and usually comes with long waiting lists, and even services like Relate still charge for most couples work. If you would rather not wait, a private programme like mine gives you a defined start, a clear structure and a fixed cost from the outset.
Do you offer online couples therapy across Cheshire?
Yes. Alongside in-person sessions near the Cheshire border, I work online over Zoom with couples right across the county and beyond. The method is identical either way, and many couples mix the two around their week.
Which parts of Cheshire do you cover?
In person, couples travel in from Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Handforth, Poynton, Prestbury, Knutsford and Macclesfield, among others. If you are closer to Wilmslow specifically, my couples therapy in Wilmslow page is worth a look. Anywhere further out, online sessions mean location is no barrier.
Where to find me
Couples therapy across Cheshire, plus online UK-wide
I see couples in person from a practice on the Cheshire border in Stockport, and online over Zoom with people right across the UK and internationally. Wherever we meet, the work itself is the same, practical, honest and built entirely around the two of you.
