No blame, just an honest read
Is this you right now?
Most Stockport couples do not arrive at my door over one big thing. They arrive worn down by lots of small ones. See if any of these feel familiar.
The same argument, on a loop. Different week, different trigger, but underneath it is the row you have had a hundred times. One of you pushes, the other goes quiet, and nothing ever really gets resolved.
Days of silence. After a flare-up you can go a day, sometimes longer, barely speaking. You stay civil in front of the kids and then drift back to your own corners.
The intimacy has quietly slipped away. The affection, the closeness, the sex. The relationship has become a to-do list you run together rather than something you actually enjoy.
You have drifted into parallel lives. Work, kids, the house, the logistics. You are good teammates on paper and near strangers in the evenings. You love each other. You are not sure you still like each other.
You are trying to come back after an affair. Trust took a hit and you are both standing in the wreckage wondering whether it can ever be rebuilt. It is one of the hardest places to be, and not a hopeless one.
If you recognise yourself in two or three of those, you are not broken and neither is your partner. You are two people stuck in a pattern that has its own momentum. That is exactly the kind of thing I help couples therapy get a grip on, and it is far more common than it feels from the inside.
A local room, not a faceless service
Based in Stockport, with the option to walk
My practice is at 5 Trentham Avenue, in the Heaton Moor area of Stockport (SK4 3QD). You come to a private, quiet room where the only thing on the agenda is the two of you, with no kids, no dishes and no phones pulling you away. For an hour it is just you, your partner and the pattern you keep falling into.
There is also a slightly different option that some couples really take to. We can do the session walking outdoors instead of sitting in the room. Side by side rather than face to face, moving rather than fixed in a chair, a lot of people find the hard conversations come more easily. It is not for everyone, but if sitting opposite someone makes you tense up, walking can change the whole feel of it.
Being local matters because getting to a session should not be a project in itself. Couples travel in to see me from right across the SK postcodes, including Bramhall, Cheadle, Hazel Grove, Marple, Heaton Moor, Heaton Chapel, Davenport, Edgeley and Reddish. If you are a little further out, or you simply prefer your own sofa, I also work online over Zoom, and you lose nothing in the method by doing so.
Plenty of the couples I see have already tried something. A few sessions at Relate. A private counsellor. A stretch of individual therapy that helped one of you more than it helped the relationship. You came away understanding the problem. You just did not come away with a way to stop having it. That gap is the whole reason I work the way I do, and it is the same thinking behind how I approach relationship counselling more widely.

No mystery, no open-ended drift
What a session with me actually looks like
This is not a vague weekly chat that quietly rolls on for a year. Every session is structured and has a job to do.
We usually start by checking in on the week and anything that came up since we last met. From there we work on the specific pattern in front of us using clear frameworks and tools, the kind of thing you can name, remember and reach for at 9pm on a Wednesday when it all kicks off again. I close each session by recapping what we covered and giving you something practical to try before next time.
Everything we build lives in a shared Google Drive of resources, with the exercises, notes and short videos in one place so you can go back over them whenever you need to. Between sessions you also get unlimited messaging support from me, for the real-life moments that do not wait politely for your next appointment.
All of this sits inside a clear programme, usually six to twelve weeks, with a beginning, a middle and an end. The aim is to hand you the tools and then step back, not to keep you coming forever. If marriage is the word that fits your situation best, it is the very same approach I bring to marriage counselling.
The outcomes people are really after
What Stockport couples come to me for
People rarely book in asking for frameworks. They book in because they want to feel a particular way again. Here is what most are quietly hoping for.
Communication that does not spiral
A shared language and a few reliable tools so a tricky conversation stays a conversation, instead of tipping into the same row within minutes.
Reconnection and intimacy
The closeness, affection and physical side of things finding their way back, so the relationship feels like more than logistics again.
Rebuilding trust
For couples recovering after an affair or a breach of trust, a steady, honest way to work out whether and how the foundation can be rebuilt.
Feeling like a team again
Getting back on the same side, pulling in the same direction, with a shared sense of where the next few years are actually heading.
Clear from the start
How it works, and what it costs
It begins with a free discovery call. We talk through what is going on, what you both want, and whether I am the right fit. No pitch, no obligation. From there I build a bespoke programme around your situation, usually six to twelve weeks, with live sessions in person at my Stockport practice or online over Zoom, the shared Google Drive of resources, and unlimited messaging support between sessions.
Most couples counsellors around Stockport charge per session, often somewhere between £60 and £150 an hour, which adds up quietly across a year. I work as a single programme of around £1,000, with an optional fortnightly payment plan, so you can see the full picture from the start rather than watching a meter run. Everything is included in that one figure, with no per-hour surprises and no drawn-out commitment.
From conflict to connection
See how I work before you decide
Have a watch of this short message about how the work actually feels in practice. Couples who had already tried Relate, private counsellors or talk therapy often point to this as the part that finally made sense.
What couples say about working with me online
★★★★★
“Steve has helped me navigate one of the hardest periods of my life. I instantly felt safe, completely listened to, and never judged. We spent our sessions walking around Bramhall Park, which I found really therapeutic and grounding. He equipped me with practical tools and techniques, and I always left feeling calmer, more confident and more in control.”

“We decided the 6 week course was best for us and we learnt and grew so much in such little time. Steve showed us we are not alone in how we feel and provided us with a variety of information and methods of dealing with the issues we were facing. We finished with a clear plan for our future, and loads of new resources we will continue to use.”

★★★★★
“Steve was great at holding space for both my husband and I to talk through our challenges and where we each wanted our relationship to get to. He brought in great techniques and tools that we were able to take away and continue practicing. We would highly recommend Steve to any couple wanting to find deeper connection.”

Common questions about couples therapy in Stockport
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
Do you see couples in person or online?
Both. I see couples face to face at my practice here in Stockport, and I also work online over Zoom. Some couples prefer the focus of being in the room, others prefer joining from their own sofa. We can decide together which suits you on the discovery call, and you can mix the two if that works better around your week.
Where exactly is your Stockport practice, and which areas do couples travel from?
My room is at 5 Trentham Avenue, in the Heaton Moor area of Stockport (SK4 3QD). Couples come in to see me from Heaton Moor, Heaton Chapel, Bramhall, Cheadle, Hazel Grove, Marple, Davenport, Edgeley, Reddish and the wider SK postcodes. For anyone further out, online sessions mean location is no barrier at all.
Is there parking for in-person sessions?
Yes. The practice is in a quiet residential part of Heaton Moor with on-street parking nearby, so getting there and settled is straightforward. I will send you the exact address and directions once we have had our discovery call and decided in-person is right for you.
How much does it cost?
Most Stockport couples counsellors charge per session, usually between £60 and £150 an hour. I work differently. My programme is around £1,000 for a bespoke six to twelve week package, with an optional fortnightly payment plan. Live sessions, the resource library and unlimited messaging support are all included, so there are no per-hour surprises.
What if my partner will not come?
You can still start on your own. I often work with one person on their own relationship, with clients ranging from 29 to 70+. If one of you shifts how they show up, the whole dynamic shifts with them. That does not mean the relationship is your fault. It means you have more influence over it than it feels like right now.
How soon should we start?
Sooner is usually better, while the will to work on things is there. Most couples have their discovery call within a week of getting in touch, the programme runs six to twelve weeks, and many notice a shift in the first two or three sessions. There is rarely a perfectly calm week to begin, so it is fine to start from where you are now.
