Getting a reluctant partner on board
How to Get Your Partner to Try Couples Counselling in Sale
In most households one person finds this page and the other has no idea they are reading it. If that is you, the question is not really whether counselling works. It is how to raise it without it becoming another argument.
Do not present it as a verdict. “I think we need counselling” lands as an accusation to a lot of people, because it implies a diagnosis they never agreed to. “I miss us and I would like some help getting back” is the same request without the charge attached.
Pick the moment carefully. Not during a row, not straight after one, and nowhere near bedtime. A Saturday walk or a car journey works far better than a face to face conversation at the kitchen table.
Offer the free call rather than the programme. Asking someone to commit to twelve weeks is a big ask. Asking them to sit in on one 45 minute conversation with no obligation is a much smaller one, and most people will do it.
Be honest about your own half. The single most effective sentence I hear reported back is some version of “I know I do things that make this worse and I want help with my part”. It is very difficult to stay defensive against that.
And if the answer is still no, you can start on your own through A pattern needs both of you to keep it running, so changing your half genuinely shifts it. Plenty of the couples I work with began with one person.
None of this requires your partner to agree that something is broken. It only requires them to agree to one conversation. If your partner is not ready yet, individual relationship counselling is a genuine starting point.
Tools you use at home, not just in session
Couples Therapy Exercises Sale Couples Can Use at Home
The reason most counselling fades out is that nothing changes between appointments. You have a good hour, you feel closer, and by Wednesday the same cycle has resumed because nobody gave you anything to actually do.
So every session ends with one exercise. One, deliberately, because couples handed six do none of them. They are small enough to survive a bad week, which is the only test that matters, and they are chosen for your specific pattern rather than issued from a standard list.
A typical early one is the ten minute download, where one of you talks and the other genuinely does not respond, then you swap. This is one of several , which tells you something useful about how rarely either of them finishes a thought.
Everything sits in a shared library of exercises, worksheets and short videos that stays yours after we finish, so you are not relying on remembering what was said. The wider approach is on my

Built around a working week
Evening and Online Couples Counselling for Sale Households
The most common reason counselling stops is not cost or willingness. It is that the only slot offered was 4pm on a Tuesday and one of you works.
Sessions run online over Zoom in the evening, which removes the drive, the childcare and the half day of annual leave in one go. It is why so many local couples choose , which is why so many choose , because you can both dial in from wherever you are.
If you would rather be in a room, my consulting space is at Flynn House on Woodford Road in Bramhall, about half an hour from Sale via the M60, with parking on site. Several couples start there and move online once the work is underway.
The wider approach is set out on my , so it never becomes another permanent fixture in an already full diary. Most Sale couples run this as online couples counselling.
The outcomes people book for
What couples in Sale want counselling to change
Nobody arrives asking for a model. They arrive wanting a particular feeling back. These four come up in almost every first call.
Disagreeing without it escalating
A shared vocabulary and a handful of dependable tools, so a hard subject stays a conversation instead of becoming the row you have had for years.
Warmth returning to ordinary days
Affection, touch and genuine interest finding their way back into normal life, so that being together is more than a shared address and a joint account.
A way forward after broken trust
For couples dealing with an affair or another serious breach, a steady and honest process for working out whether this can be rebuilt and what it would ask of each of you.
Operating as a partnership again
Pulling the same way rather than negotiating against each other, with a shared and realistic view of what the next few years hold.

People use very different words for the same need. Some search couples counselling, others couples therapy or marriage guidance. The label matters far less than whether the person fits, so here is plainly what I offer.

One programme, one figure
What couples counselling costs for Sale couples
It starts with a free discovery call. We go through what has been happening, what each of you wants from this, and whether I am the right person for it. No pitch and no obligation.
Most counsellors around Sale and Trafford charge per session, usually between £60 and £150 an hour, which accumulates quietly across a year with no defined finish. I work as one programme instead, so you see the whole figure before committing.

Choosing who to sit with while you discuss the hardest thing in your life is a lot to ask from a web page. Here are a few minutes of me talking so you can judge the fit before spending anything.
Sale and Trafford Couples on the Difference It Made
★★★★★
“Stephen has been brilliant, we have learnt a lot since starting our sessions with him. He has been very accommodating in giving us chances to bring up things we need to discuss as a couple and has taken the time to plan his sessions around what is most suitable for what we needed to get out of it.”

“Stephen has been an absolute pleasure to join me and my girlfriend to help us with solving our problems. We have both come out of this with learning methods and easier ways to resolve arguments in a better healthier way. I looked forward to our sessions.”

Couples counselling in Sale: the questions couples ask
If yours is not here, the discovery call is the right place to ask.
Do you run couples counselling sessions in Sale itself?
Sessions for Sale couples run online over Zoom, and in person at my Bramhall practice if you prefer a room. Most local couples choose online because it removes the drive and fits either side of bedtime. We decide on the free call.
Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?
Yes. A large part of why I work online is so that sessions can happen after work rather than forcing one of you to take a half day. We agree a regular slot that genuinely fits both of your weeks rather than whatever happens to be free.
How far is the practice from Sale?
Flynn House, Woodford Road, Bramhall, Stockport SK7 1PA, roughly half an hour from Sale depending on the M60, with parking on site. If that drive is the obstacle, we simply work online instead.
How much does couples counselling cost?
The core programme is £1,000 for a bespoke 6 to 12 week package. That includes live coaching sessions tailored to your situation, full access to the resource library, which is a Google Drive of exercises, videos and worksheets, and unlimited messaging support between sessions. There is an optional fortnightly payment plan. For comparison, most counsellors around Sale and Trafford charge per session, usually between £60 and £150 an hour, which adds up quietly across a year.
Can this work if we have young children and no free time?
It is designed for exactly that. Sessions are online, the between session tasks take minutes rather than evenings, and the whole thing has an end date rather than becoming another standing commitment. Most of the couples I work with have young children.
What if my partner will not come?
Start on your own. A pattern needs both of you to keep it running, so changing your half genuinely moves it. A reluctant partner frequently joins after a few weeks, once they can see something real changing rather than being asked to discuss feelings.
